Have you noticed that your toddler wants to help with everything, usually right when you are in a hurry? That eagerness is a gift. Small jobs at home build confidence, coordination and a sense of belonging. They show a child, "You are an important part of this family."
The key is choosing jobs that fit your child's age, and letting "good enough" be good enough.
Jobs for toddlers, about ages 2 to 3
- Put toys back in a bin
- Put dirty clothes in the hamper
- Wipe up a small spill with a cloth
- Carry their own cup or plate to the counter
- Help feed a pet, with a grown up measuring
- Match socks, which is also a great early math skill
Jobs for preschoolers, about ages 4 to 5
- Set napkins and spoons on the table
- Help sort laundry by color
- Water plants
- Make their bed, even if it is lumpy
- Help put groceries away on low shelves
- Help make a simple snack, like spreading or pouring
How to make it work
- Show, then do it together, then let them try. Children learn best in small steps.
- Make it easy to reach. A low hook for their coat and a bin they can open make independence possible.
- Keep it short. A two minute job is perfect for a toddler.
- Thank them for the effort, not the perfect result.
- Resist the urge to redo it while they are watching. The lumpy bed still counts.
Kids who help at home tend to take that pride with them everywhere, including their classroom. It is one of the best gifts you can give them.
