Is My Toddler Ready for Potty Training? 8 Signs to Watch For

Every family asks us some version of this question: "Is it time?" The honest answer is that there is no magic birthday. Most children show they are ready somewhere between 18 months and 3 years old, and every child gets there on their own timeline.

What matters more than age is readiness. When a child is truly ready, potty training usually goes faster, with fewer tears for everyone.

8 signs your child may be ready

1. They stay dry for two hours or more during the day, or wake up dry from naps.
2. They notice when they go. They might pause, hide, or tell you after it happens.
3. They do not like a wet or dirty diaper and ask to be changed.
4. They are curious about the bathroom. Following you in, flushing, or asking questions all count.
5. They can follow simple directions, like "grab your shoes" or "put this in the basket."
6. They can pull their pants up and down with a little help.
7. They can tell you what they need, with words, signs, or gestures.
8. They want to do things "by myself." That independent streak is a great sign here.

You do not need every sign. If you are seeing most of them, your child is probably ready to start.

When to wait a little longer

Big changes can make potty training harder. If your family is welcoming a new baby, moving, or going through a stressful season, it is completely fine to wait a few weeks. A child who resists strongly is also telling you something. Take a break and try again in a month. A pause is never a failure.

Tips for getting started

• Choose underwear during the day. Children learn fastest when they can feel that they are wet.
• Offer the potty often, about every 60 to 90 minutes, and right after waking up, before naps and after meals.
• Keep it calm and positive. Cheer for the tries, not just the successes.
• Dress for success. Elastic waist pants are much easier than buttons, snaps and overalls.
• Expect accidents. They are part of learning. A calm "Let's get you changed" is all you need.
